On your side

Hey guys! I hope your day is going well so far! I apologize that I wasn’t able to get a blog post out on Monday. It feels like it should be a Thursday right now since I was working over the weekend. It’s already been a bit of a bumpy transition into the new job and I’ve felt out of sorts. Despite the to-do list, I was drawn towards writing this morning.

Last night on my drive home from work, my sister calls me. She had a pretty rough day. Filing for unemployment and getting a $200 ticket for “following too closely” from a State Trooper all in the same day is definitely grounds for having a total shit day. As she was venting, she said, “I don’t want to be told “it’ll be OK.” If I am told one more time “it’ll be OK,” I’m going to lose it.”

And I understand that feeling. Unless you are in the exact same position and going through the same struggles, it’s hard to hear those three words from someone. Sometimes that reaction, although empathetic, almost feels like it makes what we are feeling not valid. Yeah, life could always be worse. Always. But that doesn’t take away from the fact that life can really suck at times.

I’m tired from commuting already. It’s been three days. I’m really not sure how long I can do this before I have a complete meltdown. My schedule will get busier. The work day will get longer. The work/life balance will shift and I’ll struggle. As I’m telling my sister these worries, she says, “I’m not going to tell you it’s going to be OK. Because I don’t know if it will be. It could get a lot worse. It could suck more. But I will always be on your side. You have a place to stay. I”ll cook you dinner. I’ll listen to you and will always be in your corner.”

Sometimes that is all we need. Just for someone to tell us that no matter how bad things get, we’ll still be there. We all need someone in our lives to have our back, love us unconditionally, listen to our complaints. And most of all, be there at the end of the day with open arms and tell us that they will always be on our side. I am lucky to have a few of those amazing people in my life. I am thankful every single day for the support and love I am given.

I hope you have a great rest of the week and take time to thank that person who has always been in your corner. 🙂
